"Salma Lakhani of Edmonton has been named as the new lieutenant-governor of Alberta, making her the first Muslim in Canadian history to be appointed to the ceremonial role."

U of C celebrates surpassing $1.3-billion fundraising goal (Calgary Sun) CALGARY STORY Congrats to all and especially to the advancement and development professionals who worked tirelessly to accomplish this amazing feat. "After nine years of fundraising, the University of Calgary is celebrating the end of their largest-ever fundraising campaign having exceeded their original, ambitious goal. Energize: The Campaign For Eyes High has raised $1.41 billion, surpassing the university’s $1.3-billion goal by more than $100 million."

  3. 2020 Best 50 ranking (Corporate Knights) CANADIAN STORY *A great list. Congrats to all. A special shout out to MEC, TELUS, Stantec, Suncor, and Enbridge, and Canadian Tire. "Every year, Corporate Knights ranks Canadian companies with an annual revenue of over $1 billion on up to 21 indicators."

  4. Construction complete on $850M Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (CBC) GRANDE PRAIRIE STORY Congrats to all. A much-needed facility. "Construction on the long-awaited 240-bed Grande Prairie Regional Hospital is now complete and commissioning work that will make the facility fully operational is set to begin [...]. The $850-million facility [...] was announced in [2007]."

OPINION | We could be witnessing a turning point in the oilsands industry (CBC) ALBERTA STORY "Barrels will continue to flow, but the value of those barrels in terms of royalties will be significantly lower, and the number of jobs will decline rapidly as demand flattens and then decreases. The job declines will result from slowing growth and increased pressure to reduce costs to preserve profits, leading to more lean corporate operations as well as automation in the field."

"To accompany the pandemic, a new survey reports economic devastation impacts overall mental health, including an increase in suicide for parents with children under 18. The University of British Columbia and the Canadian Mental Health Association found 1 in 10 of these parents had thoughts or feelings of suicide during the pandemic."

  9. Museum for Human Rights CEO resigns after LGBT censorship, allegations of racism, harassment (CBC) WINNIPEG STORY A very disappointing story. "The president and CEO of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights has resigned following allegations of sexual harassment and racism at the Winnipeg institution, as well as complaints that staff were forced to censor LGBT content. John Young had previously said he would step down at the end of his term in August. But the museum's board of trustees said in a statement Thursday night it believed it's in the best interests of the museum that he resign immediately."

Habitat International calls on Edmonton affiliate to halt action against 57 families (CBC) EDMONTON STORY *"Habitat for Humanity International is criticizing its Edmonton affiliate for the handling of a dispute with 57 partner families, urging the agency to halt any further action in the case until an independent mediator can be appointed." **UPDATE: *Habitat Edmonton CEO steps down amid legal battle
