SOME GOOD NEWS

  • 'The most American thing ever': Video of Calgarian's baby bald eagle rescue from B.C. lake goes viral in U.S. (CBC) CANADIAN STORY Happy belated July 4th to our American friends. "Calgary resident Brett Bacon, along with partner Lindsay and his newborn child, were speeding down Lake Windermere in British Columbia on July 4 when they spotted something odd in the water. As the boat drew closer, Bacon realized there was a large bird floating in the water with its wings spread — a young bald eagle. 'As we got closer, he tried to fly away and he just couldn't get out of the water at all,' Bacon said. 'So at that point, I just realized that he was in a bit of trouble." Lindsay started recording, and caught what happened next on video.'"

TOP TEN STORIES OF THE WEEK

  1. Oilpatch optimism expected to rise as difficult second-quarter finally ends (CBC) ALBERTA STORY At this point, we will take any good news. 2. 'We'll be living with masks for years': COVID-19 through the eyes of a pandemic expert (CNET.com) #WearAMask #Please "Unlike the influenza virus, which was behind the 1918 pandemic that claimed as many as 50 million to 100 million lives around the world, Toner says there's no good evidence of seasonality with COVID-19. Until we have a vaccine, any rise or fall in cases will be based on social factors: communities locking down and families sheltering in place. And, as was the case back in 1918, individuals wearing masks."

  3. Super-rich call for higher taxes on wealthy to pay for Covid-19 recovery (The Guardian) Just in case you were wondering if the rich cared. The super-rich members, including Ben and Jerry’s ice cream co-founder Jerry Greenfield and Disney heir Abigail Disney, called on 'our governments to raise taxes on people like us. Immediately. Substantially. Permanently.'"

  4. Washington NFL team officially drops name after decades of criticism (CBC) Good Move Washington! Lets' see if Edmonton follows suit this coming week. "The Washington NFL franchise announced [...] it is dropping the 'Redskins' name and Indian head logo, bowing to recent pressure from sponsors and decades of criticism that they are offensive to Native Americans. A new name must still be selected for one of the oldest and most storied teams in the National Football League, and it's unclear how soon that will happen. But for now, arguably the most polarizing name in North American professional sports is gone at a time of reckoning over racial injustice, iconography and racism in the U.S."

  5. Kelowna museum invites guests to don gloves and play curator this summer (CBC) KELOWNA STORY As a closet curator, I love this. Good move Kelowna Museums. "A Kelowna museum is inviting the public to put on some gloves, for safety reasons related to COVID-19, but also to take part in a new interactive program where people can experience the museum as curators. The White Glove Experience, the new program at the Okanagan Heritage Museum, allows participants to wear special museum-grade curator gloves so they can examine old objects."

This is the lowest position the chief of Berkshire Hathaway has held on the Bloomberg Billionaires index, since 2012 when the index began."

  10. The default nonprofit board model is archaic and toxic; let’s try some new models (Nonprofit AF) Vu is at it again. And he is not wrong. "However, we need to admit that boards in general are seriously problematic. I have a Rule of One-Thirds when it comes to boards: 1/3 of them are helpful, 1/3 are useless, and 1/3 are actually harmful. This means that 2/3 of nonprofit boards are useless or harmful."
