  • 91-year-old breaks world record at world rowing indoor championships (CBC) ONTARIO STORY As much as I hate rowing, it is a great exercise and this woman is...amazing! "Day 1 of the world rowing indoor championships at Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, Ont., was full of world records and historic moments, with many more expected Sunday. The action began with 91-year-old Alida Kingswood of Woodstock, Ont., shattering the world record in the lightweight 2,000 metres for those aged 90-94. She was cheered by the home crowd and even by other competitors, beating the old mark by more than 90 seconds. Kingswood finished in 10 minutes 33.30 seconds and remarkably looked like she could have gone another 2,000 metres."

  • Men of the North to host Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser (La Ronge Now) LA RONGE STORY #Brrr "A new fundraiser from Men of the North called the Polar Bear Plunge is sure to be an awakening for those brave enough to partake. The event will occur March 10 at La Ronge’s Patterson Park."

  1. New concept for a potential fieldhouse in Calgary takes shape (CBC) CALGARY STORY This would be great. I hope they build it. "There's a sense of optimism among sports groups in Calgary after the city's latest update on a potential multisport fieldhouse. [...] It would be constructed at Foothills Athletic Park in northwest Calgary, on the site currently occupied by a baseball stadium."

  2. Improvements at Calgary's Hangar Flight Museum among tourism projects to receive federal funding (Calgary Herald) CALGARY STORY Bravo. "Calgary’s Hangar Flight Museum, which hosts the country’s Aviation Hall of Fame, is receiving $316,706 for several major construction projects. Brian Desjardins, executive director of the museum, said the funds will go toward accessibility improvements and a 500-square-foot extension that will bring some exhibits out of storage."

  3. Travelling soon? Get ready to pay higher cellphone roaming rates (CBC) CANADIAN STORY Oh goody 😔. "Two of Canada's biggest telecom providers are raising the fees they charge customers when they use their devices outside of Canada. Starting March 8, Telus will charge customers $14 a day when they roam on their devices in the United States, and $16 a day when they do so internationally. That's an increase from $12 and $15, respectively. Customers of the Telus-owned discount brand Koodo will see a similar fee hike. Rival Bell is making a similar move starting the following day, raising its U.S. roaming rate from $12 to $13, and going from $15 to $16 internationally. Those increases will also be in effect at Bell-owned subsidiaries including Virgin Mobile."

  4. European Space Agency Pushing For Moon To Have Its Own Time Zone (Huffington Post) Lunar Standard Time anyone? Also, will they have daylight savings time 😉. "With more lunar missions than ever on the horizon, the European Space Agency wants to give the moon its own time zone. This week, the agency said space organizations around the world are considering how best to keep time on the moon. The idea came up during a meeting in the Netherlands late last year, with participants agreeing on the urgent need to establish 'a common lunar reference time,' said the space agency’s Pietro Giordano, a navigation system engineer."

  5. Bitter disappointment as Finland's attempt to reform Indigenous law fails — again (CBC) "A controversial package of reforms to Finland's law governing rights for the Indigenous Sámi people has failed, shattering the hopes of Sámi activists who had seen the bill as a major step toward self-determination."

  6. Florida governor signs bill giving state control of Walt Disney World district (CBC) #Sigh "Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill that takes control of a special tax district surrounding Walt Disney World that for half a century allowed the Walt Disney Co. to operate with a high degree of autonomy. 'The corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,' DeSantis said during a news event at Lake Buena Vista near Orlando. State Republicans last year targeted Disney after it publicly clashed with DeSantis, who is widely considered to be running for president in 2024, over a law that restricts classroom instruction of gender and sexual orientation, known by its opponents as the 'Don't Say Gay' measure."

  7. As tip amounts rise, many Canadians say they'd rather skip the tip — and some restaurants agree (CBC) CANADIAN STORY "Customers intent on leaving tips at Vancouver's Folke restaurant tend not to get very far. 'They'll hide it under napkins or under their plate,' said co-owner Pricilla Deo. 'If we catch it while they're still here, we just hand it back to them and politely remind them that we're a no-tipping restaurant.' When diners do make it out the door without tips being noticed, she says the money is used to fund staff dinners."

  8. Gordon Pinsent, Canadian acting icon, dead at 92 (CBC) CANADIAN STORY Rest In Peace Mr. Pinsent. We will not see your like again. "Gordon Pinsent, one of Canada's most prolific and iconic actors, has died. He was 92. 'Gordon Pinsent's daughters Leah and Beverly, and his son Barry, would like to announce the passing of their father peacefully in sleep today with his family at his side,' said a note released late Saturday, written on behalf of Pinsent's family by his son-in-law, actor Peter Keleghan. 'Gordon passionately loved this country and its people, purpose, and culture to his last breath.'"

  9. The Hollowing Of The Calgary Herald (The Sprawl) For Calgarians who remember, this is a sad story. "And for the first time in its history, the Calgary Herald has no fixed address. Today, there are about 10 cityside reporters working for the Herald and the Sun, covering the goings on of the city. That’s way down from what it used to be. In the 1980s, there were about 35 Herald reporters covering the city—and that was just the Herald. The Sun had another newsroom of reporters doing the same thing. Now it’s down to just 10 between the two papers."

  10. 2 B.C. private colleges accused of shortchanging international students through misleading tactics (CBC) BRITISH COLUMBIA STORY "When Sonali Sharma graduated from Grade 12 in her village in Haryana, India, her future seemed clear: coming to Canada as a student, getting a work permit, then getting her permanent residency. Sharma's father, a small-time farmer, mortgaged his farm and borrowed money from relatives to pay $11,000 in tuition fees. But after starting the program and realizing she had been misled, Sharma decided to withdraw and ask for a refund. The college refused, leaving the 19-year-old without the money to seek admission in a new institution, putting her future in Canada in limbo."

Trillium Health Partners (THP), which operates two hospitals in Mississauga and one hospital in Toronto’s west end, revealed at the Wednesday announcement attended by Ontario Premier Doug Ford that industrial real estate developer Orlando Corporation will match each donation made up to $75 million in the fundraising effort."

  2. Queen’s University receives “transformative” $30-million donation to carry out groundbreaking research (YGK News) KINGSTON STORY "A major donor to Queen’s University has announced that he is making another $30 million investment, this time to support 'groundbreaking research.' The university announced that through his $30 million investment, Bruce Mitchell, Sc’68, DSc’20 will help Queen’s University bolster research its capacity to advance groundbreaking discoveries that will deepen their knowledge of people, the planet, and universe."

  3. Yes campaign for voice launches with $5m donation (CQ Today) "A campaign to drive national support for an Indigenous voice to parliament has received a $5 million shot in the arm. The “yes” campaign was launched on Thursday at the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute in Adelaide, in the lead-up to the referendum, which will be held between October and December. The Paul Ramsay Foundation, one of Australia’s leading philanthropists, announced it was backing the voice by donating $5 million to Australians for Indigenous Constitutional Recognition."
