SOME GOOD NEWS

  • Firefighters rescue dog from icy pond (Yahoo! News) Great video. "A dog named Daisy was rescued by firefighters from an icy pond in [Douglas County, Colorado.]"

  • We match people fleeing Ukraine with free European housing (Yevropi) Yevropi means Europe in Ukrainian. "Founded on February 28, 2022, Yevropi is an unincorporated collective of volunteers with a single goal: to help people escaping Ukraine get matched with Europeans who can host them."

  • Airbnb setting up free housing for up to 100,000 Ukraine refugees (CBS) Nice to see everyone step-in up. "Airbnb said it will help shelter some of the nearly 700,000 people who have fled Ukraine as Russian forces continue their assault of the Eastern European country. The initiative comes as the U.N. refugee agency on Tuesday warned that Europe would soon be dealing with what it called the continent's 'largest refugee crisis this century.'"

  • A beloved New York restaurant becomes place of unity for Ukraine (The Guardian) It all helps folks. #WeStandWithUkraine "On a Wednesday morning at 10.30am, a line is already forming around the corner. The menu – which boasts pierogies, potato pancakes and borscht – isn’t normally considered brunch food. A homemade 'Ukraine belongs to Ukrainians' poster greets customers as they walk in. Flyers urging customers to support Ukraine are distributed and taped to the building’s towering windows: 'Eat Borscht – Stand with Ukraine' reads a poster, signaling that 100% of proceeds made from the restaurant’s famous bright-red beet soup are being donated to help Ukraine."

  • Brandon Stanton’s Empire of Empathy How Humans of New York became a one-man philanthropy machine. (New York Magazine) I love Humans of New York. Now, even more. "Through GoFundMe campaigns attached to certain posts, Stanton has raised nearly $8 million over the past 18 months for, among others, a retired burlesque dancer ($2.7 million), the immigrant owners of an organic bakery with a chronically ill child ($1.2 million), a man blinded by a screwdriver in a subway attack ($677,000), and a woman undergoing breast-cancer treatment who was behind on her rent ($498,000)."

  • Yellowknife woman is Canadian Pacific fleet’s sailor of the year (Cabin Radio) YELLOWKNIFE STORY Navy life and traditions used to be a big part of my life. I love this story. "Yellowknifers pick up accolades for all sorts of things. Sailor of the year in the Royal Canadian Navy is not normally one of them. Jesse Roberts, a 21-year-old who was born and raised in Yellowknife – around a thousand kilometres from the nearest ocean – has been named the Canadian Pacific fleet’s sailor of the year. 'It was a little bit surprising, to say the least,' Roberts told Cabin Radio."

TOP TEN STORIES OF THE WEEK

  1. Women athletes are redefining what 'strength' really means (CBC) CANADIAN CONTENT On top of becoming world-class athletes, they also have to deal with things that male athletes take for granted. #Strength "Players on the Canadian women's national soccer team are strong advocates on issues of LGBTIQ2S+ and for racial justice. They have supported campaigns to support frontline workers in the pandemic and constantly promote having a sustainable women's league in Canada. This is all in addition to being Olympic champions. Canada's women's hockey team is also looking for a sustainable women's league because women's hockey doesn't have one either. And they, too, are Olympic and world champions. "

  2. Billy Joel Makes Initial Donation of $250,000 to Bethenny Frankel’s Ukrainian War Effort (Showbiz411) Thank you Piano Man! "Billy Joel and wife Alexis have made what they call an 'initial donation' of $250,000 to Ukrainian war relief. They’re doing it through Bethenny Frankel’s B Strong Foundation which is part of the Global Empowerment Mission. It sounds from their statement on Instagram that more is coming. Billy has always been incredibly philanthropic, especially locally on Long Island."

  3. ADDRESSING THE “GREAT RESIGNATION” (Charity Village) CANADIAN CONTENT This is bigger than you think folks. "Does it feel like everyone is quitting their job these days? There is a lot of discussion on the 'Great Resignation' backed up with statistics indicating that many are leaving their jobs in the US due to overwork and burnout. In Canada, there is a similar trend, with people leaving roles at all levels, as reported in a recent Financial Post article. The article refers to the LifeWorks and Deloitte Canada survey results that show '51% of managers are reporting that they are considering quitting, retiring or moving to a lesser role'."

  4. Gas in Metro Vancouver has broken the $2 per litre barrier. But should it have? (CBC) VANCOUVER STORY #Eek "As if the pandemic, surging housing costs and five per cent inflation haven't already brought Metro Vancouverites to their financial knees, the fourth horseman of the affordability apocalypse has arrived as gas breaks through the $2-per-litre barrier. Yes, there was plenty of speculation the price at the pump was set to spike. But seeing the actual numbers lit up on station marquee Friday morning still felt like a slap in the face for the 98 per cent of drivers with a combustion engine vehicle."

  5. 75% of surgeons at southern Manitoba hospital, clinic are women, bucking national trend (CBC) WINKLER STORY I love this story on so many levels. #GoManitoba "Growing up in the area, she had no idea becoming a doctor was an option. Prevailing examples in the rural southern Manitoba community pointed more toward a future with marriage and kids, maybe shortly after graduation. Now 41, she is married and has two kids under the age of four. Dr. Thompson also leads a team of 13 surgeons at the C.W. Wiebe Medical Centre, a private clinic in Winkler, who also have surgical privileges at Boundary Trails Health Centre, the hospital between the cities of Winkler and Morden. Ten of those surgeons are women."

  6. 'Kyiv' or 'Kiev' — Here's why the difference is political (CBC) Until I visited Ukraine (not 'the Ukraine'), I also pronounced it as Kee-Ev. My Ukrainian friends here and there taught me better. "Kiev was the internationally accepted English-language spelling through the Soviet period and into the first years of this century. But, according to Natalia Khanenko-Friesen, director of the Canadian Institute for Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, the name 'Kiev' is now associated with the Russification of Ukraine. In recent years, more and more publications, governments, airports and geographical dictionaries have switched the spelling to the Ukrainian variant, she said."

  7. Mark Jones (The Sheldon Kennedy Show) RED DEER STORY I am inspired by Mark everyday. We are very proud to be working with Mark as he builds Central Alberta's Childe Advocacy Centre. "Mark’s passion for working with kids was fulfilled through his 36 years in the education world, as both a teacher and an administrator. He received his education from University of Calgary and completed his Masters at the University of Oregon. Mark has always believed in putting children and youth first. This philosophy has brought many students back with stories and memories, which Mark holds close to his heart. One of the highlights of his career was the opportunity to open a brand new elementary school, Mattie McCullough, and build a culture based on fun, respect and understanding. This experience was enriching and has been used to build the foundation of the team dynamic here at the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre."

  8. Lions across Alberta unite to celebrate 70 years of service (St. Albert Today) ALBERTA STORY Service clubs like the Lions have and remain critical community builders. Congrats to Alberta's Lions! "The St. Albert Host Lions Club does a heck of a lot more than cook pancakes on a griddle. It rallies to provide disaster relief support, blood donor clinics, refugee sponsorship, and legacy scholarships for high school students, just to name a few projects. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Throughout its existence, the local chapter has supported projects related to vision, the environment, childhood cancer, hunger, diabetes, and other pressing humanitarian needs across the nation and the world. [The] Lions Club celebrates its 70th Charter Anniversary Banquet this [year.]"

  9. Calgary’s Bow Valley College unveils new facility focused on visual effects (Global News) CALGARY STORY Brilliant. I was able to attend the event. This is a big deal for Calgary's future. Well done BVC! "Calgary’s film and television industry has been on the rise in recent years, and now those who develop video games are looking for similar growth. [Bow Valley College] unveiled its new Centre for Entertainment Arts (CEA), a facility focused on training the next generation of 3D animators and visual effects artists."
