VITREO FUNDRAISING ASK ANYTHING ZOOM CHATS

Join us for a reprise of our Fundraising Ask Anything Zoom events. We started Season 1 with a general conversation among friends and colleagues last April. These events proved immensely popular and we ended up doing eight in total. Last week, we launched the new season with our session titled: Pandemic +7: The Check-in. "There are three things I've learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin. Actually, that quote is from Linus, the philosopher of the Peanuts franchise, not me. But discuss this I must because I just got a metaphorical rock for Halloween that's related to the Charlie Brown animated cartoon specials. It has been announced that the Peanuts TV specials that generations of Americans grew up with are moving to Apple TV+ as part of a new corporate deal."

  2. Telus Spark is hosting a pumpkin catapult event this Halloween (Daily Hive) CALGARY STORY I'm in! "It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a… pumpkin? Telus Spark is sending October’s favourite gourd sky high this Halloween for their Great Pumpkin Smash Event, which will feature everything from a reptile meet and greet to a pumpkin catapult."

  3. Calgary Philharmonic kicks off multimillion-dollar fundraising campaign (Calgary Herald) CALGARY STORY Kudos to the CPO! And thank you John Lacie! "When the oboes, flutes and violins were laid down this spring, the silence was deafening for many classical music lovers. The temporary loss of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra brought home the importance of the arts in society. So much so, that a longtime patron stepped forward to kickstart a fundraising campaign to ensure the CPO is on solid ground for the future. John Lacey pledged $1 million to a new capital campaign — Ad Astra: Building to New Heights."

Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank receives $12,500 boost (Fort Saskatchewan Online) FORT SASKATCHEWAN STORY ViTreo is proud to have helped the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank with their campaign to build a new food bank. Thank you Medavie Health Services! "The Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank got a big boost. Medavie Health Services (MHS) West, an organization that operates the city's local EMS, presented a cheque for $12,500 to the food bank [...]."

  5. Calgary non-profits detail lost revenue, plunging attendance due to COVID-19 (Calgary Herald) CALGARY STORY These include Fort Calgary, The Calgary Zoo, and the Calgary Public Library. "The civic partners are non-profits that receive operating grants from the city, but operate at arm’s length. In April, an internal city document outlined the possibility that because of the pandemic, the organizations could lose a combined total of more than $130 million in revenue over a year."

  6. Alberta's poppy campaign makes adjustments for COVID-19 (CBC) CANADIAN STORY The Legion was way ahead of the game. They introduced the 'digital poppy' in 2019. "As the annual poppy campaign nears, branches of the Royal Canadian Legion in Alberta are preparing to re-imagine tradition during the COVID-19 pandemic."

  7. WinSport suspends season pass sales, citing unprecedented demand, (CBC) CALGARY STORY #OutdoorLifeRocks! "WinSport says it is suspending the sale of season passes for the Canada Olympic Park ski hill for the upcoming season. Unprecedented demand meant the facility had to cut off sales in order to make sure physical distancing could be maintained on the hill [...]."

Competition puts spotlight on women entrepreneurs at a time when many need help (CBC) CANADIAN STORY "An annual entrepreneurship competition for women has taken on new significance this year thanks to the disproportionate effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on women workers. In April, women's participation in the Canadian workforce — the share of the working-age population that is working or looking for work — fell to 55 per cent, a level last seen in May 1986. More than 1.5 million women in Canada lost their jobs in the first two months of the pandemic."

  9. Jayman Built celebrates milestone with generous donation to agencies (Calgary Herald) Congrats on turning 40! "Jayman Built is celebrating turning 40 to the power of four agencies that make a huge difference in the lives of Albertans. The new home builder donated more than $400,000 to the MS Society of Canada’s research program, the Calgary-based Hotchkiss Brain Institute and HomeSpace, and Edmonton-based Homeward Trust [...]. Each organization received $102,250 to help in their quests to research multiple sclerosis and to help end homelessness in the province."

  2. Inner-city youth charity receives $5 million donation from Oilers Foundation (Edmonton Journal) Nice move Oilers Foundation! "The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation is donating more than $5 million to the Inner City Youth Development Association."

  3. York University receives $10M donation (Markham Review) Nice. The Bratty Family have been very generous. There is a named YMCA in Markham as well. "York University has received a $10 million gift from The R. P. Bratty Family Foundation toward the creation of the university’s Markham Centre Campus (MCC)."
