SOME GOOD NEWS

  • Here it is, the coolest slide of all time (MLB) "There have been a lot of great slides in MLB history. Head-first dives, pop-up slides, hook-slides -- you name it. But here's a legitimate question: Did Dodgers second baseman Trea Turner just gift us the coolest slide ever?" No question. Hard to stop watching it actually.

  • San Antonio business to build, donate food truck to Olympic gold medalist for her mother (KSAT) I heart this. "A San Antonio business that customizes food trucks is stepping in to help Olympic Gold Medalist Tamyra Mensah-Stock get the food truck her mother always wanted to have. Mensah-Stock outperformed everyone in women’s wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Cameron Davies, CEO and president of Cruising Kitchens, said he saw Mensah-Stock’s story and wanted to help. Mensah-Stock has always wanted to provide for her mother, especially after her father was killed in a car crash."

  • One Woman’s Mission to Get Vaccines to Her Rural Alabama Town (Kottke.org) Vaccine hesitancy is more complex than ideology. This woman is a saint. "Levine told me that they were struck by how many people had put off vaccination for logistical rather than ideological reasons. In Panola, he says, they regularly heard people say, 'I want the shot. How do I get this? I don’t have a car; how am I going to get forty miles to the closest hospital and back?'"

  • The story of Barry the barred owl, who became a Central Park sensation (CBC) #AnimalsAreAmazing "Barry the barred owl had taken up residence in Central Park last October, and in the 10 months that followed, a community had been built around the bird, who stood out for being so accepting of humans in her space. 'In times of uncertainty, her presence became kind of a source of continuity and comfort,' Calgary naturalist Brian Keating told [The Homestretch.]"

  • Maritime farmers doing 'what we can' to get surplus hay shipped to drought-stricken Prairies (CBC) Atlantic Canada STORY #WeAreAllInThisTogether. This is awesome. "Hay from the Maritimes could make its way to the Prairies later this week as livestock producers in Western Canada struggle with devastating drought conditions. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) announced last week that it has started work to facilitate a initiative coined 'Hay West,' that will see surplus hay from farmers in eastern Canada sent west — where dire hay and feed shortages loom. Tim Marsh, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, said farmers in his province have extra and want to help out."
